Hi, I’m Gail, and welcome to Drama-Teachers.com. My journey in drama and performing arts spans over 40 years. I first took to the stage as a goblin in our local amateur drama production of “Rumpelstiltskin”, aged 7, following in the footsteps of my mother and sister who were founder members of the group. From then on, I was hooked and was directing for the group by the age of 16. Many years on, I now find myself creating a website about my passion
My Journey
My journey has been filled with enriching experiences and personal growth and I’d love to share this with you. From teaching in both mainstream and special schools to founding my own performing arts school, my career has been dedicated to nurturing creativity and inspiring new generations in the arts for both drama students and drama teachers. Well, ALL performing arts teachers are included here, since my life has also been filled with music, singing and dance.
My Knowledge
I hold a BA (Hons) in Drama and Theatre Studies, an MA in Choreography, and a PGCE – credentials that have equipped me with a deep understanding of both the practical and theoretical aspects of performing arts education. I am also a qualified dance teacher, teaching tap, ballet, musical theatre, street, jazz and modern, and I am a member of Licentiate Member of the United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dance (UKA), a professional association with over 100 years of history.
Teaching Drama and Film Studies at GCSE and A’ Level in the UK has been an immensely fulfilling part of my journey, allowing me to blend my love for academic study with performance and education. What a great gift this has been over the years and my work in the performing arts never felt like ‘work’!
Running a performing arts school for over two decades was a dream come true. I loved the entrepreneurship and focused on creating an inclusive space where students could explore their love for drama, music, dance, and singing. We produced many shows and performances to be proud of and had a lot of laughs and fun along the way. Not only this, it created a safe space for young people to enjoy the performing arts and focus on their own goals and dreams, some of whom have gone on to forge their own success in the West End and film industry. This venture also allowed me to implement my vision of high-quality arts education to a broader audience as I see the arts as an integral part of everyone’s education. In recent years, the arts have taken a knock with reduced funding in many parts of the world, but I am an advocate of the power and importance of artistic subjects to feed the soul and allow for creative and emotional expression for every person.
Personal Life
On a more personal note, I’m a guardian and mum to two wonderful children (almost grown up now) which I initially fostered over 12 years ago. It has not been an easy ride at times, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Experiences like these have enriched my life beyond words, and have helped me (I believe), to develop the values of patience, understanding, and the transformative power of love and compassion – values I hold dear in every walk of life.
Uncovering My Passions Beyond the Classroom
When I’m not immersed in the world of drama, you’ll find me engaged in swimming, yoga, or gardening. Each of these hobbies not only serves as a creative outlet but also fuels my drive for personal growth and well-being. If you catch me on a really good day, you’ll probably find me with a hammer in hand, knocking down a wall too!
Drama-Teachers.com
Why Create A Website for Drama Teachers and Students?
If you haven’t realised by now, I love the performing arts, and I also love helping others make their own way in this wonderful industry. In my last school, I was lucky enough to have the role of mentoring new teachers and early career teachers (ECTs) which has been another significant aspect of my career. Sharing my experience with budding educators and guiding them through their own journeys has been a privilege I cherish deeply.
This website aims to be a resource and a community for drama teachers and students alike. Here, we can exchange insights, find resources, explore best practices in performing arts teaching, and advance our shared love for the arts. I encourage you to subscribe to the email list and be the first to hear about our new content and resources.
Ultimately, Drama-Teachers.com is not just about teaching techniques. It’s about opening a dialogue, sharing passions, and nurturing the next wave of talent in drama and performing arts, whether as performers, technicians, producers or educators.
I’m thrilled to be on this journey with you and welcome you to our site which I dedicate to the transformative power of arts education.
